Himalayan Dog Chew
What is it?
“Chiurpi,” as it is called in Nepal, is made by boiling yak and cow milk
with a mild citric-acid additive that separates the curds. The curds are
then packed tightly into sticks and dried for weeks. The result is a
long-lasting chew treat that dogs just can’t seem to get enough of.
In Nepal, the cheese comes from an ancient recipe that is used by the
locals to create a long-lasting snack that they can slowly work in their
mouths while they are working in the fields.

What makes Himalayan Dog Chew so special?
This is one of the longest lasting dog chew that you can find. Dogs must
work the end of the treat for hours, softening it with their mouths
before small parts of it can be slowly scraped off. It is 100% natural
with no preservatives. It is an authentic type of cheese eaten by the
people of the Himalayas. When you give this chew to your dog, you know
that you are providing them with hours of high quality eating
entertainment.
The story of Himalayan Dog Chew began
five years ago.
During a three year service as a Peace Corps Volunteer
in Nepal, the company founders rescued an abandoned puppy. As the dog was teething and there was no access to the plethora
of products available here in the United States, the need to improvise
with locally available products arose. It was discovered that a hard,
cheese-like product made for and consumed by the Nepali people was the
perfect answer to the problem.
Since then, the folks Himalayan Dog Chew import only the finest quality
product and it has been tested in American laboratories for its content,
including harmful bacteria and potential for bacterial growth over time.
We are satisfied that the product we are offering to the American
consumer is safe and will fill the void for an edible treat that can
keep the attention of even the most powerfully neurotic canine jaws.
Frequently Asked Questions
Isn't milk supposed to be bad for dogs?
Milk in its raw form is what is difficult for dogs to digest. Once it is
made into cheese, the cooking process actually alters the protein making
it more easily digested. Positive rewards-based obedience trainings
often encourage the use of small pieces of cheese as motivators for
behavior. In addition, our product is extremely hard and quite long
lasting, and because of this, the amount of dairy that a dog can consume
at any one time is extremely limited.
Generally speaking, about 10% of the dogs that try our product
experience an initial loose stool or gas that always resolves. We have
never had a problem with repeated or lasting GI issues. We have been
giving this product to our dogs for 6 years, and we have had no problems
over this sustained period of time.
Isn't salt/sodium supposed to be bad for
dogs?
The amount of salt included in the creation of these chews is
negligible. It is included by the people as a flavor enhancer, not for
the flavor itself.
Is the cheese fattening for dogs?
The fat content is less than 1% of the whole product.
What if my dog gulps down big or sharp
pieces?
In the 6 years using this with dogs, we have seen many different dogs
gulp down every size of chew imaginable. On two occasions our Boxer has
passed smaller versions of what he had gulped down, but never have we
had any medical problems as a result. Unlike rawhide, these chews are
fully digestible.
Is this fair trade?
Currently, we are proud to know that our Beyond Fair Trade policy is
contributing to the economic development of the world's second poorest
nation in Nepal. We purchase directly from the farmers, and help them
make that extra money in one year, that they would have been able to
make in five years by selling the chews.
Do you manufacture the chews yourselves?
We do not have a manufacturing factory anywhere. Instead we collect all
the hard cheese from rural community co-ops of the Himalayas (currently
Eastern Nepal and West Bengla in India), which use traditional methods
in making it for human consumption.
How are the cows and yaks treated?
Cows and yaks are raised in sheds, the way it has been done forever. No
modern equipment or techniques are used in raising or milking the
animals. They graze on open grasslands or are brought fresh cut grass by
their families, and have never been introduced to hormones, prophylactic
antibiotics, or other chemicals. Cows and yaks are considered to be
sacred life-givers and are directly responsible for the improved
economic situation of the family.
What do you recommend I give my dog?
We believe that there is no size too big, and you can always give larger
chews to smaller dogs without any problem.
Of course, any voracious chewer should probably be given the largest
available and definitely be observed during the initial 15 minutes after
the dog is introduced to the new product. If it appears as though the
dog is going to inhale the entire product before those 15 minutes are
up, then it should be taken away and reintroduced at a later time. In
fact we would recommend that ALL dogs be watched at least for 15 minutes
after being given ANY new product, not just our chews.
All this being said, we do understand that there will always be some
dogs that will be unable to tolerate our product. In many cases where
stomachs sensitive to lactose or change have been discovered in the
past, owners are very aware of their own dog's limitations around
different types of food and will decline to give it to their dogs. |

TESTIMONIALS:
"Mikel! These chews arrived just
in time for Zoe's (golden retriever) bday today. She loves them. it took
a few minutes for her to figure it out then she dug in. Took her about
45 minutes to get through about a 30% of it."

Just wanted to send an email to say how much my Bostons Toby, Jack
and Molly loved the Himalayan Chew Sticks - they spent a couple of
hours Saturday and Sunday working on them and they still didn't get
half of the stick chewed down. I was even able to watch an entire
TV show without interruption from any of them, which is a small
miracle. These are great and I'll have to order some more of these
soon. Thanks again for having such a great site for all of us dog
lovers! - Elaine

I just ordered 10 more chews. Everybody I talked to that ordered
LOVES them! - Jennifer at NE Boston Terrier Rescue
Also, wanted to let you know that I gave my own dogs the Himalayan dog
chews that I had ordered and both dogs loved them!!! Reebok (whose
birthday we were
celebrating) chewed nonstop for 2 hours and consumed the whole thing.
Rockwell chewed for several hours too (after initially guarding it for
the first 10
minutes) but then must have dropped it when I left the room for a bit,
because when I returned, Reebok was chewing some more and clearly had
gotten the end of
his. I think she thought it was much better than a birthday cake!
Many thanks! Patsy
I just wanted to let you know that I bought two of the smaller Himalayan
Dog Chews, and gave them to the dogs as soon as they arrived in the
mail. Being the proud mommy of a gorgeous 3-year old boxer and an
amazing 2-year old Boston, I'm always on the lookout for a long-lasting
chew. Let me just say that Adie (the Boston) chewed on that thing for
HOURS. She was so engrossed in it, she didn't even notice when I went to
the kitchen to cook dinner (an act that ALWAYS brings her running from
wherever she is, just in case I might drop something). My boxer's a bit
of a wuss, and is paranoid that Adie will eat hers, so she spent most of
the time just watching Adie. It took Adie most of the day, but she
finally finished the chew. I was hoping my $9 might go a little
farther.... Luckily, since Scout didn't really touch hers, I can cut it
in half later and let them enjoy it again. So I just wanted to say that
(while quite pricey), the Himalayan Dog Chews were quite a success! Next
time, I'll try to get a pic of them gnawing them. Adie (the Boston)
spent the whole day laid out on the floor with her back legs kicked out,
gnawing on it all day. So there you go! Thanks so much!
These
are the second round of chews for Adie and Scout.
